Lacunal is a 3-dimensional support frame created to ease breathing when wearing a neck tube or a buff for running, trekking or other forms of workout.

Lacunal is named after ‘lacuna’ which refers to an empty space or gap. The arch structure sits on the nose and chin, creating a ‘lacuna’ or space between the fabric of the buff and the nose and mouth, allowing greater comfort with breathing and hence improves athletic performance.

The structure rests on just two points on the nose bridge and chin, which are parts of the face that are mainly bone and skin, and have least muscular movement, such that it does not hinder movements of the mouth and causes minimal discomfort.

Lacunal is produced one by one via 3D printing laser sintering technology, made in lightweight nylon plastic, and can be customized to fit individual facial sizes.

Here’s how to put on the Lacunal.

First wear the neck tube as you usually would.

Place the Lacunal on the inner side of the neck tube making sure the nose and chin supports are placed in position on your face. Then slot the top edge of the neck tube in the clasp of the nose support. This clasp prevents the neck tube from sliding down.

Finally, adjust to fit the position of the nose and chin supports, as well as the fabric of the neck tube such that it hugs nicely on your face.

Wearing a neck tube or buff during a run, a trek or work out very often causes difficulty in breathing especially when the neck tube gets wet with sweat. With the Lacunal, the area around the nose and mouth has a layer of empty space, clear of any fabric, which makes it a lot more comfortable and easier to breathe especially during prolong training or exercise.

Other than neck tubes, the Lacunal can also be used with fabric masks. Long hours of wearing masks in the high temperatures of Summer could cause relative levels of distress in breathing, and the use of Lacunal can greatly ease discomfort and even lower the risk of a heat stroke.
